Decision guide
Nine registers, one decision. This guide explains what actually determines the right flag for an aircraft — operator location, licensing, weight, financing and tax — and which register tends to fit which owner.
Start here
There is no universally "best" aircraft register. The right choice depends on how the aircraft will be owned, where it will be operated and by whom, its weight, how it is financed and the tax treatment that follows. A register that is ideal for a large-cabin jet financed offshore can be the wrong answer for an EU-based operator flying commercially.
Six factors cut through most of the confusion.
What actually decides

Match to your situation
You or your operator are established in the EU/EEA and fly under EASA anyway. An EU register keeps everything in one regulatory world.
Consider: Malta, Netherlands, Spain
You live in the FAA ecosystem or want a specialist flag that validates quickly without setting up an EU company.
Consider: San Marino, Aruba
A larger jet with bank financing, where a robust mortgage register and neutrality matter more than an EU flag.
Consider: Bermuda, Isle of Man
Your operation is centred on the Gulf and you want a regional hub with tax neutrality and free-zone options.
Consider: United Arab Emirates
A leasing structure, or a cost-conscious owner who still wants an EU/EASA flag.
Consider: Romania, Netherlands

Common questions
No. The flag sets the airworthiness regime, not the tax result. Tax and VAT depend on where the owner and operator are established, where the aircraft is imported and how it is used.
You can register the aircraft under a specialist or offshore flag, but if the operator is established in the EU/EEA, EASA licensing and Part-NCC/NCO compliance still apply regardless of the flag.
Some specialist registers validate very quickly — Aruba, for example, is known for around 24-hour validation. But real timing depends on the SPV, banking and financing, not the registry alone.
It varies. Some registers, such as San Marino, require no local company; others expect a local or EU entity. It is one of the first things to confirm for any given flag.
